Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed the private conversation that he had with Cody Gakpo which bolstered his confidence and performance
Jurgen Klopp claimed that he had a private conversation with Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo which helped the player gain confidence. Gakpo has continued to be one of the few standout performers for the Reds despite their recent struggle with form.
The 25-year-old struggled with form in the middle of the season after continuously playing in different positions for the team. Gakpo’s versatility worked against him as he fulfilled the tactical requirement of the team that suffered numerous injuries.
He faced severe criticism for his performance in the FA Cup loss against Manchester United before the March international break. Nevertheless, the Dutchman bounced back and proved his naysayers wrong, earning praise from both the fans and pundits.
Gakpo has made 51 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, contributing with 15 goals and six assists this season. The Dutch international provided an assist to Mohamed Salah and scored a goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the last game.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t the Liverpool Echo), Klopp revealed the private conversation that helped Gakpo a lot. He said:
“Great game from both (Gakpo and Elliott). If I regret something a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play more maybe. Really nice he could show it. Cody knew for a while he wasn’t in his best moment. We had a conversation and it helped him a lot. How can I have an answer for a situation if I don’t understand? Maybe it took too long. But after the talk, he stepped really up. Smart, full of confidence, physical strength.”
Earlier this season, Klopp deployed the 25-year-old as a centre forward, right winger, left winger and central midfielder. While Gakpo fulfilled his duties, he struggled to contribute immensely in goals and assists compared to other attacking players.
However, the Dutch international has played his preferred role at the left-wing position lately and delivered consistently. Gakpo interchanged positions with the central forward against the Spurs, causing chaos around the Spurs’ defence and constantly threatening them.
