Liverpool are planning to exploit the financial situation surrounding Newcastle United by signing Anthony Gordon to bolster their attacking department

Financial Fair Play rules could force Newcastle United to sell their Player of the Season Anthony Gordon amid Liverpool interest. Liverpool are planning to bolster their attacking department as their strong season faced an anti-climactic end due to poor productivity.

The Reds attackers have done well throughout this season but struggled with composure and complacency which eventually proved very costly. Liverpool suffered a sudden dip in form after the March international break, costing them the Premier League title this season.

Despite being one of the best finishers, Diogo Jota’s injury makes him very unreliable as the new head coach joins Liverpool. Furthermore, Mohamed Salah has regressed in his pace and agility, failing to be a direct threat despite his productive season.

As Salah struggled to score goals in recent months, his inability to contribute to the overall play became evident. Luis Diaz is suffering from an opposite problem as he contributes to overall buildup but fails in productivity.

Darwin Nunez faced the heaviest of criticism as he continued to fail in finishing clear-cut chances throughout this season. The core Liverpool fanbase acknowledges the contributions of Uruguayans; however, they clearly see the need for fresh faces.

Express reported that Liverpool are monitoring the situation surrounding Newcastle United which could allow them to sign Gordon this summer. The 23-year-old has made 47 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions, contributing with 11 goals and 11 assists.

Gordon is a direct threat in both attacking and counter-attacking situations, something that Liverpool have missed since Salah’s slight decline. The 23-year-old also fulfils the homegrown quota and he is a boyhood Liverpool fan despite his former affiliation with Everton.

The report suggests that Newcastle would demand around £100 million for their top asset, a steep price for the Reds. Liverpool does not through huge amounts on players unless they are a necessity or lack a suitable replacement.

It is speculative to think how returning Michael Edwards and new sporting director Richard Hughes operate in the transfer market. However, the Liverpool fanbase has complete faith in the duo who have an impeccable reputation in the footballing world. While Gordon could be a fantastic coup and an instant-impact player, there are many alternatives that the Reds would prefer due to his price tag.
