Sunderland goalie Anthony Patterson is a Liverpool transfer target
Amid his links with an exit from the Stadium of Light, Sunderland’s #1, Anthony Patterson sees himself linked with a move to Liverpool and Sheffield United as well.
That is as per The Star. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne-born goalie is a Liverpool transfer target to replace the potentially outgoing Caoimhin Kelleher. While the Irishman has been absolutely world-class for the Reds, his top-class performances also come with the demand of regular first-team football, which is virtually impossible when you also have Alisson Becker in your ranks.
Patterson‘s just inked a fresh deal down at The Black Cats, going right through to summer 2028 (Transfermarkt). So, there’s no rush for them to flog off any key players straight away, unless, of course, they get an offer that’s too good to refuse.
Now, here’s the thing – Liverpool might reckon Patterson could be the answer to their goalkeeping issues. While Alisson Becker’s an absolute beast between the sticks, there’s a bit of a gap when it comes to homegrown talent. And in PL football, having a homegrown keeper can make all the difference.
Patterson to the Reds?
Think about it – with a world-class keeper like Alisson holding down the fort, Liverpool can afford to splash the cash on top-quality outfield players. But if they want to meet those homegrown quotas, they need a local lad like Patterson to step up to the plate.
But let’s not forget about Caoimhin Kelleher, mate. The Irishman’s been nothing short of sensational for the Reds this season, stepping in and delivering some top-notch performances when Alisson’s been out. Sure, he might not have the same experience as Alisson, but he’s shown he’s got the talent to mix it with the best of them.
And that’s where things get tricky. On the one hand, Liverpool don’t necessarily need to let go of Kelleher. He’s proven himself to be more than capable of holding his own at the highest level, and he’s only going to get better with more game time.

But on the other hand, you can understand why Kelleher might be eyeing up a move. Every player wants to be playing regular first-team football, and when you’re competing with a keeper like Alisson, opportunities can be hard to come by. So, if Kelleher sees a chance to secure more game time elsewhere, you can’t blame him for wanting to explore his options.
For Patterson, though, a move to Liverpool could be the opportunity of a lifetime. So, while it’s a bit of a balancing act for Liverpool, there’s no denying the potential benefits of bringing in a homegrown talent like the Sunderland goalie.
