A closer look at all the records Liverpool broke with Jurgen Klopp at the helm
After almost a decade at the helm, Jurgen Klopp will be departing Liverpool at the end of the season. The German manager from his humble beginnings in 2. Bundesliga went on to stand at the pinnacle of European football during his best years at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp won eight trophies for Liverpool over a span of nine years at the helm. He ended the club’s thirty-year Premier League title drought and even made them champions of Europe after winning the UCL finals back in 2019.
If the result of just four games during his tenure had been different Klopp could’ve won three UCL’s and three PL titles for the Reds. But Klopp still did his best and brought back a culture of winning to Liverpool. The German manager will surely be remembered as an Anfield legend when it’s all said and done.
While Arne Slot is all set to take over from next season, there’s no guarantee that he or anyone else who follows will be able to step into the German’s shoes and continue to lead Liverpool down a path of glory. This makes for the perfect time to look beyond just the silverware and take a closer look at the records broken by Jurgen Klopp and his rampant Liverpool side.
How Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool rewrote the history books
Over the past decade, Jurgen Klopp became the only manager to win six different major trophies with the Reds. He also broke the record for most European wins as Liverpool manager. the team’s victory against LASK last season saw the German dethrone Rafael Benitez who recorded 49 European wins during his time with Liverpool.
That’s not all, as far as winning goes no one has maintained a higher win percentage with Liverpool than Jurgen Klopp has. The German manager has won 60.2% of his games as a Liverpool manager putting him head and shoulders above the rest.
Back in 2022 Klopp once again rewrote the history books by recording his 250th win for Liverpool after playing just 401 games, the least games taken to reach this milestone by any other manager in Anfield’s history.
Jurgen Klopp also became the manager with the longest unbeaten run in the Premier League with 44 matches in a row without a loss. He is also responsible for the Reds’ highest Premier League points tally with 97 points recorded back in 2018/19.
Another impressive record that the German manager has set is for the most comeback wins since 2015. Ever since Klopp came to Liverpool no other team has won more games from a losing position than his Reds. The team currently has more than 148+ wins from a losing position.
Can anyone surpass Klopp’s legacy at Liverpool?
Stepping into the shoes of Jurgen Klopp would be a tall ask for almost any manager in the world. Arne Slot will give his attempt next season, though, it is obviously too early to say how that will turn out. Even the German manager’s first season at Anfield wasn’t the best so the Dutchman can take a bit of time.
However, if Slot doesn’t turn out as well as the team hopes, next in line seems to be Xabi Alonso. The Spanish manager is close to winning an invincible treble with his Bayer Leverkusen side and he has done so without making any major signings.
His tactics are far different from Klopp’s but Alonso is an Anfield icon and thoroughly understands the values of the club. So, out of the entire pool of managers out there, Xabi Alonso has the best chance to top Klopp’s legacy with the Reds.
Much like the German manager, Alonso has also produced results without spending an exorbitant amount of money. He could be the one person who approaches Liverpool with the same mentality that Klopp did, but that’s a topic for another day.
