From De Kuip to The Kop: Arne Slot to take charge of Liverpool on June 1, 2024
As confirmed by the official club website, Dutch tactician Arne Slot will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. He will take charge at Anfield on June 1, 2024, ushering in a new era on Merseyside.
Slot arrives having built himself a stellar reputation at Feyenoord Rotterdam. He spent three years at the Dutch giants, winning them both the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup. The 45-year-old managed the club for 148 games, winning 97 of them. He led them to a club-record 84 points this season, only to finish second. Surely that is something Liverpool fans can understand.
Replacing Jurgen Klopp is not an easy task and Slot will be compared to the German at every turn. However, he has also now been presented with the opportunity to leave an indelible mark in Red. Will he be the Paisley to Klopp’s Shankly remains to be seen.
Slot becomes the first Dutchman to take over as the numero uno at Liverpool. With Virgil van Dijk donning the armband, it remains to be seen if total football will now be the norm at Anfield.
The deal to bring Slot to Anfield is all but done, pending a work permit. Give that the club has announced it means it should be just a matter of time. Michael Edwards and FSG deserve credit for ensuring that there is a succession plan in place, one that takes effect the day after Klop’s farewell.
Slot’s arrival at Anfield has to be the worst-kept secret in football in recent weeks. The Dutchman confirmed it last weekend while Klopp even sang in his honour last night, with a packed Anfield watching. Soon the focus will shift to the pitch where the results will speak for themselves. His current deal will run until 2027.
Liverpool will be Slot’s fourth club at the senior level. He started his managerial career at Cambuur before taking over at AZ Alkmaar. He moved to Feyenoord in 2021 and has since proven to be a popular figure at the De Kuip.

Succeeding Klopp was always going to be an unenviable task. The stakes will be high but Slot will also start off with a squad that is brimming with potential and with world-class facilities at his disposal. A two-time winner of the Rinus Michels Award, the Dutchman certainly has the potential to be a fan favourite. Hopefully, he continues the era of success and joy that has become second nature at Anfield in the last nine years.
Welcome to Anfield Arne Slot. We expect great things from our new head coach. You Will Never Walk Alone.
