Michael Edwards’ priority would be to bring a new centre-back at Liverpool amid arrival of Arne Slot

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth claims Michael Edwards priority would be to introduce a new quality centre-back to Liverpool in the Arne Slot era at Anfield.

Arne Slot has now taken over for Jurgen Klopp, and the Dutchman will want to concentrate on his own goals, trying to bring in players who match his system and objectives while rebuilding other aspects of the club.

Following the signing of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, Liverpool doesn’t seem to be sitting still. A plethora of players, including Antonio Silva of Benfica and Willian Pacho of Frankfurt, have already been linked to transfers to Anfield.

Speaking to Give Me Sport (h/t football fancast), Dharmesh Sheth said:

“I think Liverpool with regard to their squad and the number of youngsters that have been blooded during the season by Jurgen Klopp is only going to help the new manager Arne Slot when he does come in.”

“But looking at it from the outset, I think centre-back will be a huge priority for Liverpool going forward in the summer transfer window.”

Liverpool need to prioritise a new centre-back

Liverpool already has a strong center-back duo in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, but in the forthcoming season, backup might be a necessity. Joel Matip, 32, has a contract that expires in June, while Joe Gomez may depart to play football for the first team.

The 21-year-old Jarell Quansah has had a breakout season for Liverpool, but the center-back may not be ready to contend for a position in the starting eleven under Slot at this point, as the Reds are eager to add a more seasoned player to Anfield this summer.

Edwards has huge plans for the summer

This season, most Premier League teams have struggled to field a regular back four, and Liverpool was no exception. Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate both struggled with injuries this season, thus Klopp had to insert rookie Quansah into the starting lineup.
