A full profile on incoming Liverpool boss Arne Slot

Arne Slot sees himself appointed as the new Liverpool manager, stepping into the massive shoes left by Jurgen Klopp, who leaves the club after nine incredibly successful seasons. Slot’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter for Liverpool, and fans are eager to see how he will build on the solid foundation laid by Klopp.

Arend Martijn “Arne” Slot was born on the 17th of September in 1978 in Bergentheim, Netherlands. As a player, Slot had a modest career, primarily playing as a midfielder for clubs such as PEC Zwolle, NAC Breda, and Sparta Rotterdam. Slot got the most out of his playing career thanks to his passing and vision as per a bunch of his teammates.

Slot’s transition from player to manager was seamless. He began his coaching career at PEC Zwolle, where he initially worked with the youth teams before taking on a role with the senior squad. His early coaching stints laid the groundwork for his future success, bringing attention to a possession-based attacking style of play and nurturing young talent. According to his former teammate Bram van Polen, Slot behaved like a coach at PEC Zwolle in his final years as a player.

Slot’s managerial career truly took off when he was appointed as the head coach of AZ Alkmaar in 2019; after two years of assisting John van den Brom there. Under his guidance, AZ became known for their attractive, attacking football and solid defensive organization.

AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord

Finishing only second to Ajax in the Eredivisie before Covid broke the season, Arne Slot also took AZ to the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 in his debut season as Head Coach at the Eredivisie club. The following season was a scanty one, for the lack of a better word but fairly decent in some results. In his time at AZ, Slot earned 2.11 points per game in the Eredivisie, the highest of any coach in the club’s history. However, his exit from AZ was not on good terms due to his negotiations with Feyenoord.

In Slot’s first season, Feyenoord reached the final of the UEFA Conference League. It was in this run that the club reached the Round of 16 in the European stages for the first time in 20 years. The final though, was a lost cause to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, the club which went on to become his kryptonite in Europe. Slot won the Rinus Michels Award for the Eredivisie Manager of the Year, finishing third in the league in his debut season with the Rotterdammers.

ARNEEEEEEEEEE SLOT LA LA LA LA LA!

The next season, Feyenoord won the league; the club’s first league title since 2017 and sixteenth in the club’s history. In Europe, De Stadionclub saw themselves knocked out in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League by Roma. In the Dutch Cup, they saw themselves until the semi-final where Ajax got the better of them. Slot again won the Rinus Michels Award for Eredivisie Manager of the Year in June 2023, becoming the fourth coach to win the award for consecutive editions.

In his final season in the Eredivisie before his move to Liverpool, Slot beat NEC in the final to win Feyenoord their fourteenth KNVB Cup. They finished second in the league, and guess what happened in Europe. The Rotterdammers saw themselves knocked out by Roma for a third consecutive season, losing on penalties in the UEFA Europa League knock-out round play-offs after finishing third in their UCL group with Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Celtic.

The opportunity at Liverpool

Liverpool announced Arne Slot as their new Head Coach on 20th May 2024, following Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season. Most of the fanbase is hopeful that Slot can bring fresh ideas while preserving the core values and playing style that Klopp instilled.

Slot inherits a talented squad at Liverpool, but he faces several challenges. Replacing a charismatic and successful manager like Klopp is no small feat. Slot will need to quickly adapt to the Premier League’s intensity and maintain the team’s competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions. Additionally, managing the transition while keeping key players motivated and integrating new signings will be crucial to his success.

He will see a huge burden off his shoulders after seeing Kloppo announce the incoming chief in his own style in the German tactician’s farewell speech at Anfield. Slot is also expected to focus on developing young talents and enhancing the squad’s depth, aiming for sustained success across all competitions.

All while implementing his possession-based, high-pressing style, ensuring the team remains a formidable force. He cites Pep Guardiola as a huge influence on his managerial style but Slot comes off as someone who is much more direct than the Man City boss.

Slot’s appointment as Liverpool manager marks an exciting new era for the club. Following in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp, Slot brings a fresh perspective and a proven track record of success.
