The departing Liverpool coach confirms the uncertain future of a Reds’ player
After his departure, Liverpool goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, has raised hints about the exit of defender Nat Phillips from Anfield this summer. Several members of Jurgen Klopp‘s coaching staff will be leaving at the end of the season, including Achterberg.
After 14 years at Anfield, Achterberg has made the decision to leave. Following Sunday’s triumph against the Wolves, he participated in the post-match presentation and is ready to reconnect with Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia.
Phillips, who spent the season on loan, was also at the game against Wolves. Before moving to Cardiff in January, the defender failed to get consistent playing time at Celtic only making eight appearances.
Phillips took to social media to pay tribute to the beloved manager Jurgen Klopp. He wrote:
“Thank you Boss, for showing belief in me, and for giving me the opportunity and privilege to represent Liverpool. I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the moments we have shared together.”
Achterberg was one of several Liverpool figures to like and comment on the post, with his reply hinting at a transfer. He wrote:
“You are a good defender Nat! Good luck in your next move.”
Given that Phillips’ contract has one year left on it, Liverpool might still demand a premium for the 27-year-old. Cardiff and Leeds are likely to be interested, but the former has not yet disclosed which division it will play in the following year.
Phillips never really got much game time since he joined the Reds’ senior team in 2019. He could only make 29 appearances for the club as he failed to impress them and hence, spent most of his time away on loans.
Phillips should seize this opportunity to go on and get a permanent transfer. Although he has been out on loan recently, at this point in his career he needs to be situated someplace. Arne Slot’s plans are unlikely to include him, and it seems he has already decided to make a switch this summer.
