FSV Mainz 05 are planning to sign Liverpool centre-back Sepp van den Berg permanently after his Bundesliga heroics with them
Liverpool centre-back Sepp van den Berg is a transfer target for FSV Mainz 05 after enjoying a successful loan spell. Van den Berg played a pivotal role in Mainz surviving the relegation on the last matchday of the Bundesliga.
The 22-year-old scored an important goal for his German side against VFL Wolfsburg in their 1-3 victory that secured them. Many Liverpool fans have ardently followed the loan spell of the Dutchman and want to see him compete at Anfield.
Van Den Berg missed only one Bundesliga game for Mainz due to a yellow card suspension after accumulating five cards. The 22-year-old featured regularly as a part of the back-three centre-backs, playing a pivotal role for Mainz amid the relegation battle.
Standing at 1.92 metres, Van den Berg is a formidable presence in the backline with good strength and impressive athleticism. The Dutchman earned the highest rating (7.04) with football stats-based site WhoScored for a centre-back in the Bundesliga last season.
He won 173 aerial duels, 36 shots blocked, and made 154 clearances with four clearances off the line last season. The 22-year-old made 36 appearances for Mainz in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and receiving 10 yellow cards.
Van Den Berg is a modern-day centre-back, capable of distributing long and short passes from the backline and dictating tempo. The Dutchman is versatile enough to play as a right-back or a right-wing-back if required by his team.
According to SPORT BILD, Mainz wants to sign Van den Berg permanently from Liverpool during the summer transfer window. The German club are trying to secure the deal for the Dutchman for around ten million euros.
