Darwin Nunez admits shock over Klopp departure

Darwin Nunez has not made a significant impact in his second year at Anfield, despite high expectations on his shoulders. Departing manager Jurgen Klopp opted to bench him on a consistent basis, as the Uruguay international only started one of the final six games under the German tutelage and scored only once in the final eleven games.

His goal-scoring output reduced significantly as he slipped out of Klopp’s starting eleven in the Premier League, the Europa League, and the FA Cup. Criticisms of the former Benfica star were piqued following the Reds’s game against Tottenham Hotspur, where the 24-year-old missed every presentable chance in frustration for the Kop.

He will now suit up for his country as Marcelo Bielsa’s men prepare for this summer’s Copa America, where they commence their campaign against Panama in Florida on June 23. Arriving at the De Carrasco airport in Montevideo, the Uruguayan media quizzed him about Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool departure, where he admitted his shock at the former Dortmund manager departing Liverpool and suggested that there are no ill feelings with the German coach.

Darwin Nunez also acknowledged his regret over not winning any big trophies in Klopp’s final year at Liverpool.

Speaking to Polideportivo, Nunez said:

“We were all a little shocked by Klopp’s departure; no one expected it. It is a shame that he is leaving. I personally would like him to have left in a big way, winning things, and it didn’t happen that way. It’s also a shame for the players. I wish him the best in the world.”
