Liverpool are ready to battle Newcastle United to sign recently-relegated Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford amid potential exit of Caoimhin Kelleher
Newcastle United and Liverpool target Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as the Reds prepare for a potential exit of Caoimhin Kelleher. Trafford established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at Burnley but failed to save them from the relegation drop last season.
However, the overall poor defensive display and lack of support played a big part in their struggle under Vincent Kompany. The 21-year-old lost his starting place at the latter end of the season from mid-March as the Clarets failed miserably.
Kompany’s team lost the last three games in a row against Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and relegation competitors Nottingham Forest. Many argued that Burnley should drop Trafford after he underperformed and made a critical error against Crystal Palace away.
Trafford made 28 appearances in the Premier League for Burnley last season, conceding 62 goals and keeping two clean sheets. However, people document his young age and immense potential, emphasizing the importance of developing his raw goalkeeping abilities.
Standing at 1.92 metres, Trafford has strong reflexes and a good shot-stopping ability despite the poor first Premier League season. During his loan spell with Bolton Wanderers, Trafford displayed his ability to control the box and get clean sheets consistently.
He times his movement while defending the crosses and set pieces, implementing punches to clear the area and protect his goal. He has good distribution and ability to play the ball with his feet but he struggled with dwelling this season.
According to Football Insider (via Liverpool Echo), Newcastle and Liverpool want to sign Trafford from Burnley during the summer. The report states that Burnley has set a £20 million price on Trafford for any deal to happen.
Liverpool’s number two, Kelleher, plans to leave Anfield in the summer to become a first-team regular elsewhere. The 25-year-old is a cult hero at Liverpool and played a key role this season when Alisson suffered an injury.
