Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson praised Darwin Nunez as the main man at the club despite criticism of his finishing
Glen Johnson backs Darwin Nunez to thrive as the main man at Liverpool despite criticism about his finishing last season. Nunez faced backlash from a section of the fanbase and many experts for failing to convert easy chances last season.
However, the Uruguayan international enjoyed an overall productive season with the Reds while poor finishing hampered the whole attacking department. Furthermore, Nunez has contributed immensely to the overall gameplay for Liverpool, interchanging positions and playing as the left-attacking winger.
Currently with his international team, the 24-year-old scored a fantastic hat trick for Uruguay against Mexico in the 0-4 friendly victory. Nunez made controversial comments recently, highlighting that he feels at home with the national team amid the social media drama.
The Uruguay international blocked many Liverpool-based accounts and removed pictures related to the club from his social media account. His comments highlighting his happiness with the international squad compared to Anfield brought further scrutiny from Liverpool fanbase that criticizes him.
The fans who have unwaveringly supported Darwin through thick and thin are actively expressing their disappointment and disillusionment with his recent words and actions. There is also a common cause that the Uruguayan forward has not learned English properly which has hampered good communication.
Johnson told Squawka that Nunez is the main man at Liverpool despite the unwanted criticism he has faced last season. He said:
“People still think I’m bonkers, but yeah I think he is. The thing is [Darwin Nunez as the main man at Liverpool], I know everyone says he misses so many chances, blah blah blah. Yes, he does, but he creates so many chances, and he’s a pain in the backside for any defender to play against. And even when he’s not scoring goals or getting assists, he’s still affecting the game. So I think they’d be absolutely mental to get rid of him. I know a lot of people have said I’m mad for saying it but I’d love to have him in my team.”
The 24-year-old made 54 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, contributing with 18 goals and 13 assists last season. Many fans and Liverpool officials are hoping that the tactics under the new head coach Arne Slot could unlock Nunez.

There is no denying that Darwin has immense potential to dominate the world of football for several years. At the same time, the 24-year-old needs to understand that social media comes with untamed pollution where people voice their insecurities by bashing others more than delivering any productive opinion.
