AC Monza star Michele Di Gregorio has rejected a move to Liverpool

According to a report from the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport, Liverpool made a desperate attempt to sign AC Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio last week.

Michele Di Gregorio, 26, has made quite a name for himself in AC Monza colours in the last couple of years. He had played a key role behind AC Monza’s promotion to Serie A at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, and ever since arriving in the Italian top flight, the 26-year-old has been one of the best goalkeepers.

The Milan-born shot-stopper was one of the best performers for AC Monza this past season. He featured in 33 league games and kept 14 clean sheets in the process.

Di Gregorio’s impressive work in between the sticks has gone unnoticed across Europe. However, Tuttosport claims that Turin giants Juventus are closing in on a deal to sign the Italian shot-stopper from Monza this summer.

Christian Giuntoli, Juventus technical director, has made progress on a potential deal since holding talks with Monza CEO Adriano Galliani in April. It is understood that Di Gregorio’s agent, Carlo Alberto Belloni, will soon meet with the Turin giants to iron out the final details of the contract.

Liverpool made a last-ditch attempt to snatch Di Gregorio away from Juventus’ pursuit as they were in Milan to try and convince the goalkeeper and Monza, the report adds.

Nonetheless, Di Gregoria is keen on signing for Juventus and has rejected the Reds’ overtures, while Adriano Galliani and Monza want to keep their promise that they had made to Giuntoli over the transfer agreement.

It looks like Liverpool are looking to bolster the goalkeeping position ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and Di Gregorio was one of the names on their shortlist. Caoimhin Kelleher, the Reds’ No.2, is expected to leave Anfield this summer amid interest from Celtic and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While Adrian has surprisingly been offered a new contract, he is 37 and well past his prime, and with No.1 Alisson Becker also no longer getting younger, it behoves the Merseyside heavyweights to sign a new goalkeeper. Back to Di Gregorio, the Monza star’s Serie A years have been extremely promising thus far and missing out on his services is a big blow for the Reds.

That said, Liverpool must switch their attention elsewhere and recruit a competent goalkeeper as a potential replacement for Kelleher.
