Xabi Alonso speaks on his bond with Liverpool following Anfield snub
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has recently spoken about his decision to turn down the offer to become Liverpool’s head coach, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
Xabi Alonso’s tenure at Bayer Leverkusen has been nothing short of spectacular. He guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title before concluding the 2023/24 season by winning the DFB-Pokal Cup.
However, Alonso and his team’s dream of a treble was squashed by a harrowing 3-0 defeat in the Europa League final against Atalanta at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last month.
Following his meteoric rise as a manager, the Spaniard was widely considered the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool until, at the end of March, he vowed to stay put at Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool subsequently hired Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor, with the Dutch tactician inheriting an impressive squad.
Alonso has now explained his choice to reject an opportunity to return to Anfield this summer and reaffirmed that “my bond with Liverpool is there” despite pledging his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen.
“All these decisions, they need to be thorough. You need to really think about them,”
“It was more about what I had, not what I’m missing. For sure, my bond with Liverpool is there and it’s still there. So there’s not any kind of issue with that.”
Looking ahead, Alonso’s future as a manager looks bright after his rich success with Leverkusen. His decision to stay committed to the German champions should be respected as making the jump to one of the biggest clubs in world football and failing at this fledgling stage in his managerial career would be a massive setback.
