Cody Gakpo reveals how his Liverpool transfer fell into place

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo endured a difficult time with his decision-making in August 2022 after a switch to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United fell apart owing to the Red Devils’ FFP situation.

Speaking to ESPN Netherlands, the forward has now highlighted the circumstances in which he rejected Leeds United and Southampton on deadline day in the summer a couple of years ago before eventually sealing a £35 million switch to Liverpool in the winter transfer window thereafter.

In an interview, Gakpo has revealed that he left the situation in God’s hands. He was quoted saying the following when asked about his future:

“People might think I’m strange. I could go to Southampton, Leeds came into the race and PSV wanted me to stay. I presented the three options I had to God. If I scored once, I would go to Southampton. If I scored twice I would go to Leeds and if I scored three I would stay at PSV. I couldn’t have got a clearer sign.”

The winger ended up bagging a hat-trick for PSV Eindhoven in the match against FC Volendam and ended up staying with his club until January. Leeds United, who had kept a private jet ready to seal Gakpo’s transfer, had to return empty-handed after being snubbed.

Gakpo has proven to be a huge asset for Liverpool, and despite enduring a difficult run this season like much of his offensive teammates, the 25-year-old ended the campaign with two goals in three league appearances.

With Arne Slot arriving, Gakpo’s value to the Liverpool squad is expected to continue rising and he will definitely form a huge part of his compatriot’s plans at Anfield. At 25, the ex-PSV star has earned the backing of the club and still has his best years ahead.

In hindsight, not only did Liverpool sign a world-class forward for what now looks like a bargain, but Gakpo also managed to survive relegation after Southampton and Leeds United were both condemned to the second division at the end of 2022/23.
