Liverpool youngster Calvin Ramsay closes in on a loan switch to Wigan Athletic

Liverpool.com has reported that Calvin Ramsay is set to join Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2024/25 campaign. The Scottish right-back arrived from Aberdeen in 2022 but has since found regular minutes hard to come by at Anfield, thereby prompting him to explore a few loan spells.

Ramsay spent last season on loan at two different clubs, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End, and is expected to pursue his third spell away arriving at Liverpool two years ago. That said, the 20-year-old, who has already debuted for the Scottish senior side, remains one of the more promising youngsters in the Liverpool squad but may face a race against time to prove his worth.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is indispensable at right-back for Liverpool and Joe Gomez has taken up the full-back’s role in his absence, which has jeopardised any other player’s chances at stamping his authority in the position. Ramsay has particularly suffered after enduring an injury-ridden first season at Liverpool in 2022.

Arne Slot’s plans with the defence are unlikely to radically change, which means Calvin Ramsay is best placed to go out on loan to feature regularly. However, it must also be noted that a spell with a team two divisions below the Premier League may not yield much fruition if the 20-year-old is in Liverpool’s long-term plans.

At the same time, it remains to be seen how much utility Ramsay will add to the first team if Trent Alexander-Arnold extends his contract beyond 2025. The Englishman is one of the best right-backs in the world and his status as one of the first names in the starting eleven is unforeseen to change.

If Ramsay fails to impress on his year on loan in the upcoming season as well, the best-case scenario would be for Liverpool to permanently sell him and channel those funds towards an experienced right-back signing who can realistically offer competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold for a role in the first-team as well as add squad depth.
