Levi Colwill is expected to stay at Chelsea amid Liverpool interest

According to a report from Football London, Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Levi Colwill after Chelsea made it clear they will not sell their defender this summer.

Levi Colwill, 21, put pen to paper on a new contract at Chelsea last August, extending his stay until the summer of 2029. He was the subject of interest from many clubs including Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion back then, with the latter’s multiple bids being turned down by the Blues for the defender.

While Brighton are no longer interested in the Englishman, Football London claims Liverpool do remain keen on his services. Along with Liverpool, Bayern Munich are also interested in Levi Colwill, with new manager Vincent Kompany planning to sign a centre-half this summer.

The Pensioners would boost their financial position by selling Colwill as he came through the club’s famed academy. However, they want to keep hold of the 21-year-old and there are no signals from the player’s side as well to leave the club this summer.

Chelsea’s sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart remain big fans of Colwill’s talents and view him as a major player in the club’s plans under new boss Enzo Maresca, the report adds. The West London side remain settled knowing that the young defender is contracted until 2029 and has no intentions of leaving Stamford Bridge.

The latest transfer update on Colwill is a big blow for Liverpool, who are planning to recruit a new central defender ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

New manager Arne Slot will certainly be keen to make some changes to the squad he’s inherited from Jurgen Klopp, and that includes signing a top-quality centre-half to compete with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez.

With Van Dijk ageing, Konate injury prone and Quansah just completing his breakout season at Anfield, the addition of a fresh centre-back becomes crucial for the Merseyside giants. Colwill could have been a perfect fit at our club due to his age, potential, and mix of technical qualities and physicality.

However, Chelsea’s stance that the 21-year-old is not for sale is hardly surprising. That said, we must switch our focus to other alternative targets to fortify our backline for next season.
