Liverpool target's father has shed light on the players future at Bayer Leverkusen
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool Football Club’s top priority in the upcoming summer transfer window will be the signing of a new central defender.
The Reds finished third in the Premier League this past season and managed to win the Carabao Cup in Jurgen Klopp’s farewell campaign. The club have already appointed Dutch tactician Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor, with the focus now shifting to transfer dealings.
Arne Slot will enter the market to sign new players as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours. He must be desperate to make a mark at the club, employ an aggressive, pressing football and get the fans on his side.
With Joel Matip set to leave Anfield at the end of the month when his contract expires and Joe Gomez’s future up in the air, Fabrizio Romano feels signing a centre-back is likely to be prioritised over other positions by Liverpool.
“I think the top priority for Liverpool will be the new centre-back. What they really want to do as priority target is the new centre-back and then an offensive addition is also important and possible in case they find the right opportunity,” Romano told The Debrief podcast.
Liverpool’s defensive rock, Virgil van Dijk had a fantastic 2023/24 season and played a key role in leading the young team to the Carabao Cup success. However, the Dutchman is set to turn 33 in July and, while he has not shown signs of slowing down, our club must come up with a plan to replace him soon.
Furthermore, Ibrahima Konate endured another injury-hit campaign at Anfield. The Frenchman and Matip suffering fitness issues derailed our campaign to some extent, leaving Klopp to manage with Van Dijk and Jarell Quansah in central defence.
This led to the Reds conceding 41 goals in the Premier League during 2023/24—12 more than runners-up Arsenal who enjoyed the best defensive record in the division. We must address the frailties at the back this summer which should go a long way in helping Slot build a strong team next season.
