Scotland kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against host nation Germany at the Allianz Arena on Friday night. They enjoyed a highly successful qualification campaign that yielded five consecutive victories under manager Steve Clarke, including a stunning 2-0 success over Spain.

If the Scots are to shock Germany in their group-stage opener, Andrew Robertson and his men have to recreate the kind of performances that made the flavour of the European Championships qualifying campaign. The Liverpool star feels his team have enough to frustrate Germany and make the most use of the ball when they possess it.

“If we can do that, hopefully, that is the key to getting a result,” Robertson told a news conference. (h/t ESPN). “We believe we can do it and it is up to us to show it.”

Scotland, who also face Switzerland and Hungary in Group A, have never played in a knockout phase of a tournament. This miserable run dates back to the 1954 World Cup, something Robertson wants his nation to end in the upcoming Euros.

“We don’t want to have any regrets this time,” he added.

“We believe we are a team that can create history.”

Scotland were dealt a scare when Robertson was taken off in Scotland’s 2-2 friendly draw with Finland before the Euro 2024, with manager Steve Clarke later explaining his skipper felt nauseous at half-time. The 30-year-old withdrew early from Monday’s training session after a knock to his ankle but calmed down fears by saying he left the pitch ‘as a precaution’.

Robertson had the least productive campaign of his Liverpool career this past season, managing just five goal contributions in 30 games. Injuries derailed his 2023/24 season and he will be looking to make up for the last time with valuable contributions for Scotland, where the left-back remains one of the key attacking threats.
