Liverpool has key edge over Barcelona in ‘$65m race’ after Xavi sacking

Liverpool is reportedly pursuing RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo

Liverpool is reportedly interested in acquiring Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig this summer. Reports indicate that the Reds hold an advantage over Barcelona in the pursuit of the 26-year-old, who is rumored to have a release clause of $65m (£51m/€60m) valid until July 15.

According to Marca, the price will increase thereafter, potentially dissuading Barcelona from pursuing him. Olmo previously played in Barcelona’s youth ranks, and there’s purported interest from the club in bringing him back. However, the Spanish outlet suggests that Barcelona currently faces constraints. Financial Fair Play regulations limit their ability to make such signings, and they would need to free up space in their wage bill to accommodate Olmo.

The player reportedly desires clarity on his future by July 15 and is likely to participate in the European Championship with Germany, making an early decision pivotal. Whether Liverpool will be Olmo’s next club remains uncertain, but what type of player would they be acquiring?

Previously with Dinamo Zagreb, Olmo faced Liverpool twice during the 2020/21 Champions League, despite RB Leipzig suffering a 4-0 aggregate defeat. He showcased versatility in both matches, starting as a forward in a 3-5-2 setup in the first leg and later shifting to left midfield in the second leg.

Liverpool has a history of acquiring players from Leipzig, having signed three in the past six years. Although Olmo did not overlap with Naby Keïta’s tenure, he played alongside Dominik Szoboszlai in 43 matches and with Ibrahima Konaté in 20 matches. Olmo and Szoboszlai collaborated for three goals during their time together, including one in a DFL-Supercup loss to Bayern Munich two years ago.

Liverpool should consider signing Dani Olmo based on his proven versatility and technical abilities, which could bolster their midfield and attacking options. Olmo has demonstrated his quality in high-pressure matches, such as Champions League encounters, and his international experience with Spain adds further credibility to his profile.

His capability to play various roles—from forward to midfield—provides tactical flexibility that aligns well with Arne Slot’s style of play. If Arne Slot opts for the 4-2-3-1 formation he often used at Feyenoord, one can easily envision Olmo slotting into the trio behind the striker. While Liverpool already possesses similar players, suggesting they may not require Olmo’s signing, his skill set could provide a valuable option if the Reds decide to introduce a tactical shift.

Liverpool’s recent success with players from RB Leipzig, combined with Olmo’s familiarity with Dominik Szoboszlai and potential synergy with the squad, could facilitate a smooth integration.
