While increasing the squad depth looks like a plus for the club, it really comes with a price. Life as a professional footballer can come to you quickly. Be it about the arrival of a new head coach or a potential competition for your position. Keeping your desire and ethics above everything becomes important during such times. There’s one such player who has found himself in a similar situation at the Liverpool Camp.
Arne Slot has addressed Kelleher’s comments on wanting to leave Liverpool
Arne Slot managed to sign Yashin Trophy 2024 nominee Giorgio Mamardashvili at the dying moments of the window. Although he will be staying with Villarreal till the season, it has already caused the current second choice in goal to guess his future. Kelleher boldly expressed his desire to leave Liverpool recently. While his contract which pays him £10,000 per week doesn’t expire till 2026, the Irishman has made it pretty clear about his departure.
Following this sequence, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has taken time to address their situation. According to Fabrizio Romano’s X post, Slot said:
“Kelleher said he wants to leave? I would be worried if a player came out and said he loved it on the bench and wants to stay there for the rest of his life!”
Although this may sound like a positive note, it really makes Slot’s intentions clear. He who signed a third goalkeeper with Alisson Becker as the club’s first choice, has it pretty clear regarding Kelleher. The positive note also kind of sends a message that the Irish Goalie is free to find a new home.

Kelleher has been with Liverpool for nearly a decade now. Having joined the youth club in 2015, he signed his first contract in 2019. While he has spent most of his time on the sidelines, he has been there through it all. From an unused substitute in UCL 2019 final to starting the EFL Cup 2024. Kelleher has made 47 appearances for Liverpool as Becker has been always a choice ahead of him.
While it may sound like a rough patch for Kelleher, the 25-year-old still has got a long way to go. Having learned under Jurgen Klopp and Alisson Becker, he surely will take some valuable lessons wherever he goes. At least for now, his future lies on Merseyside.
