Liverpool head coach Arne Slot highlighted consistency in performance as the only expectation he asks from the senior team players. After enjoying a strong start, the Reds are at the top of the Premier League and the Champions League table.
Their success has invited questions about the season’s expectations with all trophies still on the line despite the recent transition. Liverpool appointed Slot as the new head coach during the summer after the departure of the legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.
Neutral football fans and pundits immediately delivered sceptical season predictions over the chances of Liverpool competing for the major trophies. Every football pundit highlighted Manchester United and Arsenal’s failures after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger respectively.
However, Slot has proven himself an exception as he humbly accepted the squad Klopp left instead of making grand chances. The former Feyenoord manager has not changed the things that worked under Klopp and only added his expertise at Liverpool.
Slot enjoys the same philosophical style which implements a high-pressing system and the same culture of developing the available players. The vast difference dwells on the tactical side of things as many profiles are changed which worked to the Reds’ advantage.
The rise of Ryan Gravenberch as the number six and defensive improvement from Trent Alexander-Arnold and the whole team have played a crucial role. Meanwhile, the attacking department continues to shine while doing the same things they did under Klopp, barring a few tweaks.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (via Liverpoolfc.com), Slot highlighted that he only demands consistency as the expectation from players. He said:
“We do talk about expectations and the only expectations I have is that they put the same effort in on a daily basis, like they’ve done for the past three, four, five months and probably for the last six or seven years – but I’m only here for three, four, five months now. That’s the only expectation there is – that they work every day as hard as they can to get their habits, our habits, what we want to see on the pitch in the best possible way. And with that, normally results come as well. But I’m not asking them to win every game – I’m hoping they do – but what I do ask from them is they put the effort in on a daily basis, and that’s the only thing we focus on.”
Liverpool cannot afford to make the same mistakes that cost them major trophies last season under Klopp. Despite having a vastly successful season, the Reds faltered in the end as their issues with complacency cost heavily.
