Jamie Carragher reveals Michael Edwards teachings on Liverpool transfers
Jamie Carragher has revealed what Michael Edwards told him on how to be a good Sporting Director in his column on the Daily Telegraph (h/t Liverpool Echo).
Edwards, the Sporting Director at Liverpool, is also the head of recruitment. He has been instrumental in Liverpool’s excellence in the transfer market over the last few seasons. A number of players brought in by him have played a crucial role in the club’s rise to the summit of European football.
Not only has he brought in players to supplement Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy, but he also ensured that the players at the club have their long term futures tied down. Edwards works closely with Jurgen Klopp and Mike Gordon to identify new signings and organize contracts.
According to Edwards, there is no higher priority than maintaining a good relationship between the club and the player’s agents. Not only can a breakdown lead to unsettling a player at the club, but it also becomes a sticking point in future purchases.
“A fall-out can deprive you of one of your most valuable assets, or rule you out of the race for the next prime target.”
He went on to say that players today are influenced by their agents and not the other way around. The Liverpool manager has also praised Edwards and cited him as a reason for extending his stay at the club. Klopp elucidated on Edward’s contributions off the pitch that have ensured Liverpool have the assets to win it.
