“The best team in Europe”: Michael Owen makes bold Liverpool claim despite Atletico defeat
According to a report by Daily Star, former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has made some bold claims despite our recent exit from the Champions League.
We were trailing Atletico Madrid 1-0 from the first leg and although we were able to secure a lead in the second leg, two goals from Marcos Llorente and a last-minute goal from Alvaro Morata ended our hopes of progressing beyond the last 16.
Since then, the dust has simply been refusing to settle. Even in 2018, we faced a similar situation against Real Madrid. Loris Karius’ blunders prevented us from beating the La Liga giants. And this time too, back-up keeper Adrian let us down.
This loss has ended our Champions League title defence. As a result, we only have the Premier League title to look forward to.
Speaking after the loss, Owen backed the Reds.
“There’s no question whatsoever that every single big team around Europe has just breathed a huge sigh of relief, Liverpool are out, and I’ve got no doubts that they are the best team in Europe at the moment,” he told BT Sport (h/t Daily Star).
He went on to add that even though we lost the game, our team put up an outstanding performance throughout the 90 minutes. Conclusively, Owen admitted that the difference between the two teams were the goalkeepers.
That part is true. Adrian’s blunders almost gifted the result to Diego Simeone and co. on a silver platter. The only consolation here is that we can now focus solely on winning the elusive Premier League title. We have a huge lead at the top and if Man City lose to Burnley, the league title could be ours to win at Goodison Park.
