Jamal Lewis desperate to join Liverpool

According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool have been handed a major boost in the pursuit of Norwich City starlet Jamal Lewis, as the Northern Irishman is desperate to move to Anfield this summer.

The 22-year-old Lewis came through the youth ranks at Norwich City and played a key role in their promotion to the top-flight in 2018/19. While the Canaries ended up getting relegated back to the Championship in 2019/20, Lewis one of the few positives for the club.

The Northern Ireland international ended the season with a solitary goal from 28 Premier League appearances. What impressed most was the youngster’s attitude to fight back and work his way back into the starting XI after he had lost his place to Sam Byram for a few games.

Liverpool have been monitoring the 22-year-old with a view of signing him in the ongoing transfer window. A new left-back should be a priority for the club, given the lack of a proper cover for first-choice option Andrew Robertson.

The Scotsman has been brilliant since joining, but needs to be rested and rotated aptly. But apart from the ageing James Milner, Jurgen Klopp has no other option at his disposal. So, signing someone like Lewis would be a great move by the club.

And as per the report, the 22-year-old is intent on making the jump to Anfield as well. It claims that Lewis understands he will not be a regular starter at the club, but wants to continue his development under Klopp.

Liverpool value the left-back at £10m, while Norwich are holding out for a transfer fee of £20m. However, the player’s willingness to make the transfer happen, is likely to lead to the two clubs reaching a middle-ground in the coming weeks.

We’ve made some good investments in players from relegated clubs in the recent past – Gini Wijnaldum, Robertson, Xherdan Shaqiri. Lewis, too, could prove to be a shrewd purchase in the long run.
