Liverpool urged to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford
Speaking on The Hard Truth Podcast (h/t Mirror), Darragh MacAnthony, the chairman of Peterborough United, has urged Liverpool to go after former Posh striker Ivan Toney this summer.
Toney, a product of the Newcastle United youth academy, has seen a lot of success since leaving the Magpies permanently in 2018. Having signed for Peterborough United, the Englishman enjoyed two fine seasons with the Posh, plundering 49 goals in 94 games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
This prompted Brentford to sign Toney in the summer last year as a replacement for Ollie Watkins, who moved to Aston Villa. Having joined the Bees, the 25-year-old enjoyed a prolific 2020/21 campaign, as he led the team to promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs almost single-handedly.
Indeed, Toney ended the 2020/21 season with an amazing tally of 33 goals and 10 assists from 52 games in all competitions, including two goals in the Championship playoffs. Now, Peterborough chairman MacAnthony, who is a Liverpool supporter, has urged the Reds to move for the 25-year-old Englishman. (h/t Mirror)
“I’m a Liverpool fan and I know my players. And I’d be delighted if we signed Ivan. Give me him over (Divock) Origi any day of the week. Liverpool cross the ball with quality for fun and imagine Ivan getting on the end of those crosses from those full-backs!”

Liverpool could certainly do with a new forward after Roberto Firmino underwhelmed the last term while Divock Origi is staring at an uncertain future at Anfield. And Toney, given his exploits over the past couple of years, can be an interesting choice for Jurgen Klopp & co.
However, it does seem unlikely that the Reds would be making a move for the 25-year-old.
