Georginio Wijnaldum hints at behind-the-scenes issues at Liverpool
Speaking to Voetbal International via Sport Witness (h/t Mirror), Georginio Wijnaldum, who is set for an exit from Liverpool this summer, has hinted at behind-the-scenes problems at the club as a reason for his decision.
Wijnaldum has been with Liverpool since 2016, having signed from Newcastle United. A key cog in the middle of the park in Jurgen Klopp’s all-conquering side over the past few years, the Dutchman is on his way out this summer.
Indeed, Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of this month. And, the 30-year-old has been announced as PSG’s latest signing.
Speaking of his feelings over leaving Anfield, after a successful five-year stint, Wijnaldum opened up on how emotional he was over the impending exit. (h/t Mirror)
“I am still emotional because at that moment you realise: It was my last game for Liverpool. Also, the fact that before me, many players left who didn’t get something like that makes it special for me.”
Problems at Anfield?
The midfielder was then asked the reason for him deciding to leave Liverpool, in response to which he made a startling revelation, claiming that there were some issues behind the scenes that were out of his hands. (h/t Mirror)
“There are many supporters who ask me why I didn’t just accept the offer from Liverpool to extend my contract. But of course, it’s not just that. It’s about much more than that. There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence as a player. I will explain that after the tournament because now only Orange [Netherlands] counts.”
“What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club, and my fellow players would have liked to keep me. I did tell them a bit more. After that, they understood my decision completely. That is important to me.”
