Transfer News: Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas not wanted by Napoli
Rai Sport journalist, Ciro Venerato, has told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli’s Radio Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo) that Napoli are not interested in a transfer for Liverpool left-back, Kostas Tsimikas.
This comes after a report by Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t The Express), as covered by The Kop Times, claimed last week that Napoli were interested in a loan move for Liverpool’s Greek defender.
Tsimikas made the switch from Olympiacos to Anfield last summer but has failed to make a mark on the team. He was handed just two outings in the Premier League as Andy Robertson was Jurgen Klopp’s undisputed first-choice at left-back.
However, it doesn’t take long for things to change in football. Not many would have envisaged at the beginning of last season that Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams would be the Reds’ first-choice centre-back in their top-4 hunt.
Tsimikas to Napoli could be off
But that turned out to be the case towards the final couple of months as the Reds saw their senior centre-backs incur injuries one after the other. And this situation cannot be ignored as Klopp prepares his team for a new campaign.
If Liverpool’s Scottish left-back is injured and Tsimikas is not at the club, then the German manager would be in a very tight spot. It is always better to be safe than sorry, and Tsimikas’ stay at Anfield would undoubtedly calm Liverpool fans next season.
It was also his first season in England and it is unfair to already judge him based on the paltry playing time he has been afforded.
