Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool unlikely to land Italian ace Nicolo Barella
Speaking on the Here We Go podcast (h/t The Daily Star), reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that it is unlikely that Liverpool will land Nicolo Barella this summer.
The 24-year-old was a key part of Roberto Mancini’s Italian squad that triumphed at this summer’s European Championship. He played all but one game, scoring once and assisting twice as the Azzurri defeated England in the final. (h/t Transfermarkt)
It was an excellent way to cap off what was a brilliant season for the player. Barella played a key role in Inter Milan securing their first Serie A title since 2010.
His performances for club and country have not gone unnoticed. He is of the right profile and has the right skill set to add much to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad.
Romano however believes there is little reason to believe that the player will move to Anfield. The Reds are on the lookout for a midfielder but Barella is unlikely to be that player.
“Liverpool will go for a midfielder but not immediately, so it will take some days maybe. Barella is not a real target, there’s no chance.”
Liverpool have to replace Georginio Wijnaldum, who left the club for Paris Saint-Germain. The Dutchman’s work rate and availability are two traits that need to be replaced as soon as possible.
The likes of Saul Niguez and Franck Kessie have been linked as potential replacements. One name that we can now cross off the list is Barella. Who we eventually end up signing remains to be seen.

It is a shame that Barella is not a realistic target to join Liverpool. The Reds could benefit from the player’s skillset and given his age, he could develop into a fine long-term player at Anfield.
