Transfer News: Xherdan Shaqiri ready to call it quits at Liverpool
According to the Italian publication Corriere Dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri is looking to leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
The Swiss international who joined the club from Stoke City in 2018 has largely functioned as an option off the bench. He has, however, impressed and has scored eight goals and made nine assists in 63 games for the Reds. (h/t Transfermarkt)
While Shaqiri enjoyed an excellent first season at Anfield, he struggled for game time since. He is now seeking a fresh challenge and has already informed the club of his intentions.
According to the report, Liverpool will not stand in Shaqiri’s way this summer. The Swiss ace remains a man in demand and has been linked with a move to Italian giants Lazio. He believes Maurizio Sarri’s style is suited to his strengths and appears keen to link up with the former Chelsea boss.
“I like to play more attacking football and Sarri practices it. It would be intriguing.”
Shaqiri is familiar with the Italian top flight thanks to a brief spell at Inter Milan in 2015. He has admitted to being a fan of Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare and is keen to be a part of the project.
The lure of regular playtime!
The winger is keen to play regularly and believes he may achieve that in Lazio. The chances of him becoming a regular at Liverpool is fanciful and it is in the club’s best interests to let him move on.
“This is why I told Liverpool that I feel ready for a new challenge. They accepted my wish and will seriously consider the offers that will come. They will not stop me.”
Shaqiri has just a year to go on his current deal at Anfield. It is now or never for Liverpool and the money brought in could aid us in our transfer business in the weeks to come. With Takumi Minamino failing to settle and Dicovk Origi struggling for form, Shaqiri’s exit could prove to be the catalyst for the Reds to bring in another dependable attacker.

Selling Shaqiri will not just add to our transfer funds but also free up space for the club to sign a non-home grown player. The Swiss star has served his usefulness at Anfield and it is now time for the club to rebuild.
The ideal time for us to do so was last season. But having passed on it, there is no better time than now to set the wheels in motion.
