Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold responds to future captain claims after contract extension

Speaking to the club’s official website, Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold claimed that he wants to be a leader on the field after claims about him being a future captain were made.

Earlier this week, writing in the pre-season diary for the Liverpool website, the Reds’ assistant manager backed Alexander-Arnold to become the club captain in the future.

“I see a leader, I see someone who controls his emotions, a future captain. A leader by example. Someone who’s capable of fulfilling those roles and being a captain without necessarily having the armband on your arm is something that I’ve always wanted to try to be.”

Responding to the claims, Alexander-Arnold, who penned a new contract with Liverpool on Friday has insisted that he wishes to establish himself as a leader on and off the pitch in the coming years, for youngsters coming through.

“It’s about just winning things, leading the team as well in certain ways, being more of a leader on the pitch, off the pitch for the younger players. Establishing myself in those kind of roles as a leader would be something I’ve got my eye on.”

A product of the Liverpool youth academy, there is no denying how far Alexander-Arnold has come over the recent years. A mainstay in the side for Jurgen Klopp, the Englishman did endure a slight dip in form last season, but recovered in fine fashion towards the end.
