Steven Gerrard’s time in America and the MLS has come to an end. The former Liverpool captain moved to the MLS after ending his time in the Premier League with the Reds. Gerrard’s greatest honour was winning the UEFA Champions League with the Merseyside club but the Premier League title eluded him cruelly in the 2013-14 season.
Gerrard didn’t really win a lot with the LA Galaxy and last month, he stated that a big decision was coming his way on Instagram. The 36-year-old has now confirmed that he will be returning to England and he enjoyed every minute of playing for the Galaxy. In an open letter – published by LA Galaxy – he said:
“When I left Liverpool, I came to Los Angeles with the goal of helping the LA Galaxy lift another MLS Cup,” he wrote.
“I am very disappointed to have not achieved that objective, but I can look back at my time at the club with pride at what we accomplished, including two straight playoff appearances and countless memorable moments on the pitch.
“I have loved every minute of my time in the States and playing for the LA Galaxy. I am excited to see this league and this great club continue to grow.”
The Englishman further shed light on his future and added on Instagram.
“It’s certainly not the end of me, in football terms. I’ve got a lot of things to consider, over the coming weeks and months.
“I’m sure I’ll be back involved in the game. I’ve got options on the pitch, off the pitch.
“And everyone’s aware I’ve got a contract with BT Sport to analyse the Premier League and Champions League games that I’ll honour once I’m back.
“But I’ve got a lot of thinking to do over the next two or three weeks, I’m not ready to make a decision or finalise anything that I’m going to be doing moving forward.
“What I will say is I’m going home to spend some time with my family, and basically go over my options.”
Future for the former Red captain
Gerrard did state that he will be looking to decide his future soon. There already are rumours that Liverpool want the 36-year-old to take up a role in the academy and start earning his coaching badges. The former skipper would be a great addition to the coaching staff and certainly would be a great presence to have as the Reds look to win their first Premier League title.
There were rumours stating that Brendan Rodgers wants Gerrard at Celtic, but the former Swansea manager denied everything regarding the same, as he mentioned that his transfer plans for January do not include the signing of Steven Gerrard. The Hoops are sitting pretty on top of the Scottish league and the Englishman could do a great job there as well.
Gerrard will have a lot of options available to him but he should not take a hasty decision. The move back to Liverpool, even in a coaching role, does seem to be the best option for him and it will be interesting to see just how this plays out.
