Jurgen Klopp had stated that he wants to add more quality to his attack in the winter window and one player who has been linked with a move to Anfield is Dutch attacker Quincy Promes. The 24-year-old is one of the brightest talents in Dutch football and currently plies his trade for Russian side Spartak Moscow.
The Reds might have kept Promes as an option in January but that seems to be in jeopardy as another Dutch attacker has a big role to play in Promes staying with his club. Memphis Depay of Manchester United hasn’t had the best of times this season with the club and is wanted by the Spartak player.
This is according to the Russian agent Alexey Safonov, and he was quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying that Promes wants the help of Depay to win the Russian title.
“According to my information, the Dutch want to help Spartak win the title, and Depay is ready to come to Moscow.”
Promes has been pretty good up front for the Russian side this season having scored six goals from 15 league games. The 24-year-old can play across the line but his ability to score important goals certainly makes him stand out.
The Dutchman could have been a great replacement for Sadio Mane, who is set to leave in January for the African Cup of Nations but Depay could be looking to throw some water onto that.
Not a Promising sign for the Reds
It would have been a great option for the Reds should they have signed the 24-year-old but now it seems Promes will be staying in Russia until the end of the season at least. This will be a major problem for Liverpool as they lack cover for their attack this season.
Injuries to Philippe Coutinho, Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge have put the side in a lot of pressure and a couple of other injuries would certainly lead to many youngsters playing in the starting XI.
Liverpool had a bit of an injury scare as Divock Origi had to be substituted in the 3-0 win over Middlesbrough but Klopp did mention that it wasn’t a major worry for the Reds as they take on Everton on 19th December.
The Reds are the leading scorers in the Premier League at the moment but that can all turn to dust should the likes of Roberto Firmino or even Divock Origi pick up long term injuries. Klopp has to work fast and decisively in the upcoming winter window if the Merseyside club is to maintain their run for a top four place.
