Two Manchester-based referees to take charge of the blockbuster Manchester City vs Liverpool tie

As confirmed by James Pearce on Twitter, Anthony Taylor and Paul Tierney are going to be the referee and the Video Assistant Referee respectively for the upcoming Manchester City vs Liverpool tie at The Etihad. Both the referees are from Manchester and this could potentially be a cause for concern to our fan base across the world.

The Reds have been flying high this season. They have already got their hands-on the EFL Cup this season and would be hungry to bag more silverware before the end of the campaign. Whilst the Citizens sit on top of the Premier League table at the moment, Liverpool are within touching distance of the defending champions.

Both the clubs are only separated by one point which is why the upcoming fixture against Man City could quite possibly decide who manages to bag England’s top-flight tournament this time around.

The two refs from Manchester

Anthony Taylor has refereed 47 matches with the Anfield outfit involved and has brandished 72 yellow cards for players in Red Jersey to date. Paul Tierney was also in charge of the Everton vs Manchester City fixture earlier in the 2021-22 season. VAR for that match, Chris Kavanagh as well as the Salford-born referee had to face some flak as they chose not to award the Toffees a penalty for a Rodri handball.

This match is very significant in terms of the race for the PL title this season and keeping their track record in mind one can understand why some Liverpool fans are furious with the appointment of these match officials.

The Reds have been professional throughout the campaign and would be looking to get their hands on the Premier League once again after lifting it back in the 2019-20 season. The Merseyside-based team have managed to steer clear of any grave injury issues this season.

Jurgen Klopp has done a commendable job of marshalling his troops and managed to churn out some great results during the African Cup of Nations despite the short-term absence of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

This shows how much we have developed as a team rather than becoming a club that has to rely on just a few attackers to get the job done. The Reds already bagged their first major trophy by securing the EFL Cup back in February.

More Liverpool News

The famed quadruple is now in sight but the Anfield outfit would have to keep their focus at an optimum level as the smallest chip in their armour could turn a potentially great season into a mediocre one by their own lofty standards.

It will be interesting to see how things unfold as we head into the business end of the season. The fixture against Man City could make a big difference to our campaign and we hope that the lads can make the best out of their opportunities, with the appointment of the two-manchester based referees not having such a great effect on our scoreline.
