Transfer News: Real Madrid decide to postpone bid to sign Liverpool target and AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni

According to Spanish outlet Marca (h/t Metro), Real Madrid have taken the decision to postpone their bid for AS Monaco midfielder and Liverpool transfer target, Aurelien Tchouameni, to next year.

And French outlet Tele Foot (h/t Metro) apparently claims the Reds are also the frontrunners to sign the 22-year-old Ligue 1 star. This would come as a great piece of news for Liverpool fans considering the quality of the player we are talking about.

The Monaco midfield general also spoke about his future earlier this week, where he addressed the situation surrounding his contract and how, as of now, he is bound by it.

“I am contracted here until 2024 with the option until 2025. We’ll see what the future has in store for me.”

Tchouameni is a big part of Philippe Clement’s side and joined them from Girondins de Bordeaux in January 2020. Since then, he has climbed his way up to now become a regular starter for his team, while also earning his senior France debut.

Madrid’s apparent postponement of their bid to sign the midfielder would please the Reds because the Spanish giants are one of the biggest clubs in Europe, alongside Liverpool, and possess the pull to sign some of the best talents around.

What next for Tchouameni?

Liverpool’s current midfield options are strong. But they aren’t the youngest in the world and the ones that are in their formative years, don’t have the experience of playing in central midfield week in, week out.

This bracket of starlets includes Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Tyler Morton. Tchouameni can bridge the gap between these youngsters and the veterans of the sport- a group that includes James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago Alcantara.

An able defensive midfielder, Tchouameni can play as a number 6 as well as in central midfield. Those that have watched him play would appreciate his positional awareness and his eye to read opposition attacks.

Sure, he may not be the perfect, most complete midfielder out there but at 22, he has a lot of years still ahead of him. Jurgen Klopp is known to get the best out of some of the youngsters he trains and if he can take Tchouameni under his wing, the possibilities are endless.

But for that to happen, the Reds would have to fight Chelsea, who are another club linked with the Frenchman. The Blues house N’Golo Kante in their starting XI, who is Tchouameni’s teammate at France. Liverpool, meanwhile, signed their first senior French player since Aly Cissokho and Mamadou Sakho’s arrival in the 2013/14 season, when they got a deal across the line for Ibrahima Konate last summer.
