On-loan Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic is being targeted by West Ham United according to Daily Mail.
The 23-year old is currently on loan at Hull City and would command a fee of £16 million according to these reports. The Serbian has not featured for Liverpool since the 2014-15 season and has been out on loan since the beginning of last season.
He spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Turkish club Fenerbahce and then returned at the start of this season, only to be sent out on loan once again, this time to Portuguese club Sporting CP.
He then joined Hull City on a temporary basis until the end of the season in the winter transfer window, after being recalled from his loan spell at the Portuguese club.
He has made 8 appearances for Hull City so far but hasn’t scored or assisted any. However, his performances have been encouraging and now, he seems to have attracted West ham’s interest.
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic is under pressure to finish in the top-half of the table and after what has been a season of under-performance from the Hammers. There is no doubt that he will be looking to bolster his squad in the summer.
Markovic arrived at Anfield with a lot of expectations and played 34 times for the Reds in the 2014-15 season. He scored 3 goals and registered an assist but that wasn’t enough to convince then-manager Brendan Rodgers to consider the Serbian as a part of his plans and Jurgen Klopp too hasn’t seen him as a part of the scheme of things after taking over in October 2015.
There is no doubt about Markovic’s quality but somehow, it hasn’t really worked out for him at Anfield and it is understandable.
A move to West Ham might be a good one as the Hammers lost Dimitri Payet to Marseille. After the kind of season that they’ve had, it would be better if they invested some money on recruiting some good quality players in the summer.
Though £16 million might be a bit too high for a player who has not performed well in the past couple of seasons, the prospect of having a quality player like Markovic in the ranks would surely tempt Bilic.
It might be possible for West Ham to try and negotiate a lower price as the player is clearly surplus to requirements at Anfield.
However, the final call would lie with Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp on whether they intend to use the versatile attacker or not.
