Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson set to miss Napoli clash

According to BBC, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will miss the match against Napoli on Tuesday as the Reds kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign.

Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also unavailable for the Reds. But recently, Thiago Alcantara made his way back into the squad after a prolonged period on the sidelines due to injury.

Henderson limped off the pitch in the second half during the match against Newcastle United owing to a hamstring issue. He is set to be sidelined for three weeks.

This injury forced Liverpool to move for a new midfielder in the transfer market and made a deal for Arthur Melo of Juventus. The Brazilian signed for the Reds on a loan deal of £3.9m, with the option to buy for £32m.

The former Barcelona man has a good chance of starting the game against Napoli after he cut the bench against Everton. With Thiago also back in the reckoning, it will be interesting to see who starts the game, given Harvey Elliott is going through a purple patch.

Speaking on Henderson’s injury post the game, gaffer Jurgen Klopp sounded rather optimistic to see the skipper return to the first team after the international break.

“We have the result of the scan. It will be after [the] international break, I think, he will be back.”

Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League

This will be the Reds’ first fixture in the UEFA CL, after last season’s final loss against Real Madrid. Liverpool would be hungry to get back this time around and hope to cross the final hurdle, narrowly missing out last time.

The Reds have had a lacklustre start to their league campaign and the cup fixture comes at a time giving them a good break from the lengthy Premier League season and giving them a change in proceedings.

Hopefully, the Reds pick up a good form this game and carry on the momentum in the league fixtures as well. Liverpool plays Wolverhampton after Napoli followed by their second group-stage UCL fixture against Ajax Amsterdam.

Besides, missing out on Henderson’s services will be a jolt given how he has been a very vital cog in the team’s success over the years. Nevertheless, it is crucial for the Reds to go through this tough period of injury scares as a team and aim for success.
