Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool need “reinvention” post 4-1 thumping at the hands of Napoli
According to The Mirror, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp believes that the Reds need a bit of “reinvention” as they look to face Wolverhampton Wanderers. This comes after the 4-1 loss to Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium on Tuesday night.
The Reds’ poor start to the season continued to creep into the UEFA Champions League matches as well. Without undermining and exaggerating anything, Liverpool were absolutely schooled by Napoli’s front three in the fixture.
Horror night for Joe Gomez. The Englishman could not get the better of Napoli’s #9, Victor Osimhen. A Piotr Zielenski penalty saw the Reds trail the game initially. Franck Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone made it three on the stroke of half-time. Quite early in the second half, Zielenski scored one more to put the home side four up.
The Reds managed to get a consolation goal through Luis Diaz, and apart from that, there was nothing much to offer from the Liverpool frontline. With a packed schedule ahead, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp urged the team to “reinvent themselves” to find ways of scoring. (h/t The Mirror)
“It looks like we have to reinvent ourselves. There is a lot of things lacking, the fun part is that we have to do it in the middle of a Premier League and Champions League season. We have Wolves on Saturday and if they saw the game tonight, they cannot stop laughing, they would say – and I would too – it is the perfect moment to play them. We have to set up better in pretty much everything.”
The performance from the Reds was really poor. Until Thiago Alcantara came on, the tempo for the Reds seemed to be lost, and the Spaniard’s presence brought a sense of calm to Liverpool’s play. Besides that, there was not much to cheer about on the night, for a Liverpool supporter.
Next in Line for the Reds
Apart from the “obvious things”, Liverpool need to “reset and go” according to the German. Following this shocking big defeat, it will be very interesting to see how things take turn from here on.
It was obviously a tough challenge and Liverpool succumbed under the pressure possibly. A tough result to take, for everyone involved from the Liverpool side of it. Klopp resonated with this statement as well.
“So it was everything obvious. Why it happened, that’s now the question. I cannot answer it now, give me a little bit of time to think about it. It’s really a tough cookie to take, but obviously, I have to take it.”
With a tough schedule ahead of them, Liverpool needs to regroup rapidly and tackle most of their problems away. That tackle though, should not be like the one Virgil van Dijk had on Victor Osimhen earlier today.
