Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in Liverpool target Douglas Luiz
According to Birmingham Live (h/t Liverpool Echo), Chelsea are the latest club to show interest in signing Liverpool transfer target Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian, currently playing at Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard, will be out of contract in the summer of 2023. The 24-year-old can play multiple roles in the midfield. Liverpool’s prolonged interest in the player saw the Reds bid £20m for him during the final hours of the summer transfer window.
The former Manchester City midfielder is very integral to the Villains. The management at the Birmingham club will be in dire straits with Luiz’s contract situation and the upcoming January transfer window gives Aston Villa the final opportunity to cash in on the player. Either that or bear the risk of losing one of their most integral players for free.
Luiz at Anfield
Liverpool would do themselves a world of good if they manage to convince the player to move to Anfield. A defensive midfielder who can play further up the pitch is something the Reds are certainly in need of.
The Reds, who need a backup or an understudy to Fabinho in the number six role could see Luiz as a perfect replacement. Additionally, his ability to play in the central midfield roles comes in as an added advantage. Jordan Henderson and James Milner are aging and the club needs long-term replacements.
With the futures of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita at the club in tenterhooks, it is wise for the club to look at other options. The Brazilian is also adept at set-pieces, providing Liverpool with multiple free-kick and corner takers.
As far as Chelsea are concerned, they are in a similar situation as the Reds in terms of the midfield.
A number of their midfielders are running out of contracts and they need long-term replacements as well. Additionally, Arsenal had multiple bids rejected for Luis in the summer, and it would not be a surprise to see them have another attempt at signing The Brazilian.
