Transfer News: Liverpool still in the race for Enzo Fernandez
According to Portuguese publication O Jogo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are still very much in the race to sign talented Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica and could make a move for him in the winter.
For a player who just moved from River Plate to Benfica in the summer, the Argentinian starlet is already attracting a lot of attention from the big clubs around Europe. Fernandez has impressed one and all with his performances at his new club.
The 21-year-old central midfielder has taken to European football like a fish to water and there is no doubt that his performances can only keep getting better from here on. Such has been the impact of the Argentinian that Lionel Scaloni just handed him a cap for the national team a few days ago.
Fernandez has played 13 games for the Portuguese giants this season across all competitions scoring three goals so far. His impact on the pitch is far beyond what the numbers suggest and he shows unbelievable maturity for his age.
Predominantly a central midfielder, Fernandez is the definition of a versatile box-to-box midfielder. Capable of playing both in defensive and attacking midfield if the need arises, the 21-year-old is a special talent.
The best evidence for how highly the Argentinian prospect is rated is the fact that Benfica have inserted a release clause of €120m in the contract of Enzo Fernandez which is a truly ridiculous fee.
There is no doubt that Liverpool are actively looking to reinforce the options they have in midfield and Enzo Fernandez provides them with a very exciting yet very young option who can add fresh legs to an ageing midfield.
It is being claimed that the Reds are expected to make a move for the Argentine sensation in January but one thing that is sure is that the Portuguese giants will not do any favours by letting Enzo go for cheap.
The 21-year-old has a contract with Benfica until 2027 (transfermarkt). If he continues in the same vein, it is almost certain that Enzo will not be in Portugal for so long but whoever decides to buy him will not have him for free.

It remains to be seen how the Reds go about their negotiations for Enzo Fernandez. Benfica did not make life easy for us when we signed Darwin Nunez from them in the summer and they certainly won’t make life easy for us with the Argentinian either.
