Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters defends Trent Alexander-Arnold amid major criticism

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo), Southampton’s English right-back Kyle Walker-Peters spoke about Trent Alexander-Arnold and defended him amidst the Liverpool right-back being subject to a lot of criticism in the last few weeks.

The Scouser, who recently turned 24, was under the scanner for his “below-standard” defending abilities and was also on the receiving end of trolling online. He put in a solid performance in the UCL game against Rangers earlier this week, and also got the Man of the Match.

But prior to the game, he was termed as “Championship level” by a former Premier League player. But most importantly, Trent did not pay heed to any of this and managed to put in a solid performance on the European level.

Walker-Peters, who has shared the pitch earlier with Trent at the U21 level, has certainly no doubts about the Scouser’s abilities and continues to back him amid this volume of reprobation.

“I’ve played with him a few times in the 21s and I know his quality. I mean he’s shown it in the Premier League for the last 3-4 years now. You know, people are always going to comment on your performances.”

“As footballers we’re used to it. I don’t think it’s affecting him to be honest, I know his character and I know he’s just going to get on with things and prove people wrong. As I’ve said, he’s shown everyone how good he is, so I don’t doubt him.”

Trent reinvented after Rangers?

Life will be very tough for footballers if they would start listening to each and everything being said about them. Trent focusing on his game and getting a very good performance before the tough run of fixtures comes at just the right time for the club.

This current season though, Trent has not got any assists as of now but has scored three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions. Hopefully, he gets off the mark in that too and there is no looking back from thereon.

A tough task awaits him this weekend when Liverpool face Arsenal. Facing an in-form Gunners and Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank, who has been in sublime form, will not be easy for Trent.

But hopefully, he brings his A-Game to the capital and the visitors walk back victorious at the end of 90 minutes. Trent is an extremely crucial aspect of Liverpool’s approach to games, and if he is on song, the team shall be too.

With the England squad yet to be announced, Trent would hope to put in a great string of performances to cement his place on the plane to Qatar for the World Cup in November.
