Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool must beat Tottenham to make the top four
Speaking to the club’s official website, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold says that the Reds have to beat Tottenham Hotspur in their upcoming league fixture to rekindle their hopes of a top-four finish.
Following a second straight defeat in the league, this time against Leeds United, that too at Anfield, the Reds are nowhere near a Champions League spot. They currently sit ninth with a little over a quarter of the league campaign done.
With only four wins from 12 games, the season so far is not looking good by any means for a team which was challenging for a quadruple less than six months ago. With increased competition in the top half of the table to add misery for the Reds, it would not be an easy task to secure one of the four UEFA Champions League spots.
Speaking of the Reds’ next league fixture and the chances of Liverpool making the top four, here is what the 24-year-old Scouser had to say to the club’s official website:
Without Liverpool’s most creative player in top form, Liverpool tend to look a bit monotonous in terms of their attacking dynamic. Trent especially has not been great this season and is yet to bag an assist across all competitions this season.
“That’s something for everyone to think about, that’s something for everyone to address and make sure we put it right, especially next week against Spurs, top-four rivals. We kind of need to go there and get some points if we’ve got any chance of reaching our aims and aspirations for the season.”
Could the Reds get a result against Spurs?
Spurs have been flying high this season and are third on the table to Arsenal and Manchester City. However, they are one of the most unpredictable teams in the league and could possibly falter under pressure.
It is extremely crucial for the Reds to secure a positive result against the Spurs in their upcoming league fixture. Heading into the international break, the Reds could especially do with a positive result. Moreover, Liverpool also plays Southampton ahead of the break for the World Cup as well.
With the squad at Liverpool’s disposal, it is shocking to see how they are unable to close games much earlier and are falling to the trap of early goals conceded wherein they practically have to chase them for almost the entirety of the 90 minutes.
The early conceding of goals creates a psychological disadvantage in the players’ heads and it is tough to come out of those situations. Trent in particular has to play better than he has been this season.
