Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson gives his verdict on the Reds’ 2-1 win over Tottenham
Speaking after the game against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool star Andy Robertson has given his verdict on the club’s second-half showing to protect their lead.
A hard-fought 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur would have certainly upped the mood in the Liverpool dressing room. The first half was a joyride for the Reds, who seemed to be in cruise control immediately after kickoff and scored their first goal within 15 minutes via Mo Salah.
He was quick to double the Reds’ advantage and scored his second in the 40th minute of the game. With a two-goal lead at hand, one would understand the urge of the Reds to just see off the result rather than attacking the ball.
However, heading back into the tunnel after the halfway stage of the game, Liverpool would have realised that Antonio Conte is not a smooth-talking manager and would demand a harsh fight-back from his Spurs side.
And the Spurs fought back extremely well. It was a mammoth task for the Reds to keep the ball from going behind Alisson. Ibrahima Konate and Robertson were especially good in defence against Tottenham. However, individual brilliance from Harry Kane saw the home side score a goal in the 70th minute.
It took a lot of mental courage to see out the game, and here is what the Liverpool left-back Robbo had to say about keeping Spurs at the bay in the second half via Liverpool Echo:
” We could have been better on the ball and tried to do better to find the front players. At the end of the day, you are coming to a top six team who have just been booed off at half-time and have a manager who expects a reaction, and I think they got that.”
The home side, heading back into the dressing room at the interval, were subject to booing off by the supporters and to their dismay, their manager also was fuming more often than not during that first-half performance.
Robertson positive in win vs Tottenham
However, the second half was a totally different story with Spurs managing to breach the Reds’ backline multiple times and have a go at goal. If it was not for Alisson and/or Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool would have not won the game and that is as straightforward as it can get.
The Reds were also not as clinical as they were in the first 45 but still, the defenders held their nerve and here we are, three points from Tottenham Hotspur stadium where we the Reds were subject to a few rash decisions from the referee last season.
Robbo himself had a pretty decent game barring a few lapses early in the first half but it was good enough for the Reds to fly back to Merseyside with three Premier League points to boot.
With Southampton up next in the league, Liverpool need to be wary of how they will play. Following the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl, the South-coast outfit could be unpredictable.
