Brad Friedel urges Liverpool to sign either Ngolo Kante or Mason Mount
Chelsea’s midfield duo of N’Golo Kanté and Mason Mount both run out of contract next summer and the Englishman also sees himself linked with a move to Liverpool. Another few of the big midfield names also linked with the Reds include Jude Bellingham and Frenkie de Jong.
The Mirror recently came out with a report linking the Dutchman to the club, and Liverpool’s interest in Jude is no secret. However, both these players have long-term contracts at their respective clubs and hence, luring them away would obviously come at a heavy cost.
Liverpool’s current midfield situation is not the most ideal and the manager Jurgen Klopp could do with a new player or two. Contracts of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also run out next year and that would rather make the gaffer think about long-term replacements.
Former Liverpool goalie and pundit Brad Fiedel suggested the Reds explore a move for the Chelsea duo of Kanté and Mount in case moves for primary targets Jude and de Jong don’t go through. Via The Express, here is what he said.
“Mason Mount would do a lot of good for Liverpool,” Friedel told Betway. “It’s a no brainer for [Jurgen] Klopp if it works for both clubs. Mount is an exceptional player and the only time it would be a no brainer for Klopp is if it works financially for Chelsea and Liverpool.
“Kante could be a superb free option for Liverpool if they can’t get a deal over the line for [Jude] Bellingham or [Frenkie] De Jong – but he’d have to play. If a player like N’Golo Kante comes along on a free then he’s going to have to play. Kante is really good. There’s been some injury issues, sure, but he’s outstanding.”
Although there is no doubting the Frenchman’s skills, plus he is a Premier League veteran, he has not kept fit off late and is also on the wrong side of his thirties. Liverpool, at the moment, possesses plenty of older players. Youngsters could rather suit the Reds better than Kanté.
New midfielders at Anfield
Mount is someone who comes under that criteria. A Premier League-proven player, A Champions League winner and still has his best years ahead of him. Mount could easily fit the bill for the Reds if a move for Jude doesn’t go through.
The current season so far has proven that Liverpool could do much better than they are at the moment with extra security and firepower in the middle of the park. There have been a lot of injury issues at the club and inconsistent performances as well, and the incoming of a midfielder or two could solve those problems.
Even in the case of the Reds being unable to land any of the above players, quality midfielders like Ismael Bennacer and Marco Asensio continue to be linked with the club, and a move for them could turn out to be great for Liverpool as well.
