Harry Kane told he could have been at Liverpool if not for long-term Tottenham Hotspur contract

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is one of the world’s best centre-forwards. The 29-year-old will lead England in the World Cup in Qatar starting later this week for The Three Lions. He will for sure play a huge role in Gareth Southgate’s team in their pursuit of winning the tournament.

However, it is not as straightforward as it sounds. Kane had multiple opportunities to leave the North London outfit to explore other opportunities and have a better chance at filling his trophy cabinet.

With just two years left on his contract, his future at Spurs remains a constant doubt. He could have been a proper replacement for Sadio Mane, who left Liverpool for Bayern Munich last summer.

Speaking of the England squad as a whole, former Manchester City fullback and pundit Micah Richards talked about Harry Kane and his chances of moving to “a bigger club”, and also spoke of his chances of moving to Liverpool. (h/t Daily Mail)

“What more can be said about Captain Fantastic? He’s just absolutely sensational. Signing such a long-term contract at Tottenham was a mistake because he could have been at Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich winning the trophies his ability deserves.”

Kane’s current contract at Spurs expires in 2024. The latest extension Kane made to his contract at the North London side was way back in 2018 as per Transfermarkt. Richards believes that signing such a long-term contract is a mistake and he could have moved to a club wherein he would have had a better opportunity to win the trophies he is missing out on.

Kane and Liverpool

Moreover, Liverpool could have done themselves a world of good by bringing in a class striker like Kane. The only thing which could ever concern the Reds would have been his chemistry with other players and probably his age. However, everything looks great in hindsight.

The Reds now have a potent attack spearheaded by Mohamed Salah, and young guns like Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez secure the frontline for the foreseeable future. Taking nothing away from his abilities, the question remains if he has the defensive workrate to fit into a Jurgen Klopp team.

In 408 appearances for Spurs across all competitions, Kane has 261 goals and 62 assists. With these kinds of numbers, he could be the chair of any frontline of any top team in world football.

At this point in time though, any claims for a transfer for Kane are unrealistic, to say the least. Spurs have only Richarlison to back him up, and the Reds have a lot of firepower in their attack at the moment.
