Benfica to offer Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez a new deal amid growing Premier League interest
Enzo Fernandez is one of the top midfielders who continue to stand linked with a move to Liverpool. The 21-year-old Benfica midfielder is a World Cup winner with Argentina, and also sees Chelsea alongside the Reds wagging their tails in his trail.
The central midfielder, alongside Jude Bellingham, is one of Liverpool’s choicest transfer targets for either the January window or over the summer. In 24 appearances for Benfica across all competitions this season after making a move from River Plate earlier in the season, he has three goals and five assists across all competitions for the Portuguese giants.
With Liverpool completing the signing of Cody Gakpo not so long ago and turning their focus towards getting Bellingham on board, Chelsea’s interests in Enzo are accelerating and amid this growing interest, Benfica want to tie their player down to a long contract as per the Daily Mail.
The player was absolutely pivotal in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign, and by the looks of it, his work rate at both ends of the pitch would suit Liverpool like a glove. However, with growing interest from the English top tier, here is Benfica’s statement about Fernandez’s situation via their official website:
‘Sport Lisboa e Benfica reiterates its intention to count on the player Enzo Fernández until the end of the season.’
Enzo and the Reds
However, keeping hold of the player until the end of the season is not something only Benfica could decide as the player’s choices will also definitely come into the picture here. After all, playing in what is renowned all over as the best league in the world is an opportunity everyone would love to have.
Liverpool and Chelsea are pretty much in a similar situation when it comes to their midfield as their core group of central midfielders are ageing as well, and both clubs need long-term replacements.
It will eventually come down to whoever makes the most ideal bid for Benfica, and obviously Fernandez’s decision as well. Both Fernandez and Bellingham are on the Blues’ radar and the last thing we want would be a bidding war, and that is why the Reds need to be quick and swift in their proceedings in the transfer market.
