Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti unsure of Marco Asensio future amid Liverpool links

Marco Asensio has been a reported Liverpool transfer target for quite a while now. Even though the links have died down in recent months, there is no denying that the Reds were at one point no less than hell-bent on getting him on board at Anfield.

Asensio’s current contract expires at the end of the season(Transfermarkt) and he will be a free agent in the summer if the two parties do not agree on a contract extension. Liverpool would obviously stand aware of such a possibility.

One potential benefit of signing Asensio is the flexibility he could provide to Liverpool’s attacking options. The 27-year-old is capable of playing on either wing or as an attacking midfielder, giving Jurgen Klopp plenty of options when it comes to setting up his team.

His manager at Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti spoke about his future and admitted that even he is unsure of what the future holds for Asensio. That certainly adds fuel to the fire of speculation. Here is what Carlo said via Liverpool Echo:

“He looks good to me, so I don’t know if he stays or not. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. I don’t care much. We have some important challenges this season. The most important thing is that he contributes like last year. Let him continue as he is doing now. Then the club makes the most appropriate decision in the end.”

If Liverpool were to sign Asensio, it’s likely that he would play second fiddle to Mo Salah on the right wing. While Salah is one of the best players in the world in that position, having Asensio as a backup option could be a valuable asset for Klopp.

Could Asensio move to Liverpool?

With Liverpool likely to face a gruelling schedule of fixtures next season as well, having quality depth in all positions will be crucial to their success. With Asensio’s contract set to expire this summer, Liverpool may have a better chance of securing his signature than if he were under contract with Real Madrid for a longer period of time.

However, they will still need to navigate negotiations with Real Madrid and potentially other interested parties to make the move happen. And sensing from what Ancelotti has said about Asensio’s situation, his departure from Los Blancos at the end of the season seems only like a matter of time.

Having said that, there is certainly a need for a right-winger at the squad to give Mo a break at times as he is one of the most important players of the squad and overutilizing him is certainly not in the best interests of the club.
