Cody Gakpo talks about the Liverpool-Manchester United derby ahead of Sunday’s clash
Liverpool is currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League, just six points behind Tottenham in fourth place with a game in hand. They have had a slow start to the season, but have recently started to hit their stride.
Cody Gakpo spoke to Liverpool’s official website about taking on Manchester United this weekend, with his comments carrying added significance due to the Red Devils’ interest in signing the player before his move to Anfield. The Reds are unbeaten in their last four league games in a row and are looking to continue their good form against United as well.
Speaking of Gakpo, he had a tough start to his Liverpool career but is now starting to find his feet at the club. He has been an important player for the team in recent games and will be looking to make an impact in the upcoming derby against Manchester United.
Interestingly, before his move to Merseyside, he was extensively linked with a move to our bitter rivals and we snatched him at the last moment. In 11 appearances so far for the Reds across all competitions, he has two goals to his name and would hope to get that number up sooner than later.
Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of the derby, here is what Gakpo had to say about how important the fixture is for the Reds:
“Obviously for us it’s a big, big game, we need the three points again, especially at home, so we can continue the run we are making at the moment. It’s a big game, I think everybody knows it, so yeah, I’m really looking forward to playing this game.”
Gakpo for the Reds
For Liverpool, this game against Manchester United is obviously crucial. They need to win to continue their push for a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League next season. The team knows how important this game is, and will be giving it their all to come out on top.
Gakpo certainly understands the magnitude of the derby against Manchester United. He would know that it is a big game for Liverpool and that they obviously need the three points to continue their run of good form. Judging from his words, he is looking forward to playing in this game and helping his team secure a vital victory.
This game certainly will be season-shaping for the Reds as the campaign, in general, is heading towards a crunch and from this point onwards, each and every point will matter more than any other stage. United themselves are high flying at the moment, and hopefully, we can get the better of them at Anfield.
Gakpo has already scored for the Reds in a derby when he put one past Everton at home, and he would certainly be hoping to get another derby goal this Sunday at the Fortress and solidify our chances of a top-four finish.

A win here would take us to the fifth spot above Newcastle United, who lost their recent game against Manchester City which was a crucial result for the Reds. Hopefully, we get the desired result from our own fixture and do not depend on anyone else dropping points.
