Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler on the club’s midfield situation
There have been a lot of calls for a complete midfield overhaul at the Reds. Amid these calls, former Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler wrote about why the Reds should pursue a number of world-class midfielders in the summer and cited a low number of goal contributions as a reason for the same.
Comparing the goal contributions from Liverpool’s midfield to the likes of Manchester City, Fowler pointed out the huge gaps between them. Not even the best campaign from Mohamed Salah, he remains our highest goal scorer and that should certainly tell levels about the rest of the squad.
There is an urgent need for goalscoring midfielders who could share the burden with the likes of Mo and Darwin Nunez and the Reds’ pursuit of such talent stands held back due to the frugal spending habits of the club owners, FSG.
Writing in his exclusive column for The Mirror, here is what Fowler wrote:
“I have a question for you. What is Liverpool’s first choice midfield? Even after a shocking season, it’s probably Henderson-Thiago-Fabinho. Second question: how many goals have they scored between them?”
“The answer is a big fat zero. Yep, you read that right. No goals from a midfield trio that so very nearly wrote history. In any competition. So far, they have made a combined 99 appearances so far, and not a single goal.”
Lack of Midfield Goals Hurting Liverpool?
Ever since the departure of Phillipe Coutinho, the Reds have lacked a goal contributing player from the midfield. Moreover, with Gini Wijnaldum also no longer with us, Liverpool do not possess a player who can start week in and week out without the risk of injury as well.
Stefan Bajcetic, Harvey Elliott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are the only Liverpool midfielders who have at least one goal this season. And as far as assists are concerned, Jordan Henderson has one and so does Thiago Alcantara. The major chunk of the goals are rightly coming from the forwards, but the midfield also needs to step up to ease the pressure.
In conclusion, Liverpool’s midfield needs to step up its goal-scoring output if they want to compete for top honors in the Premier League. By signing a goal-scoring midfielder or developing their current midfielders’ attacking abilities, Liverpool can improve their chances of finishing in the top four and competing for the title.
While the lack of goal output from midfield is certainly hurting the Reds big time, the good form of our forwards is the only positive we can take from here.
