Jurgen Klopp gives sobering top-four verdict after Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest

Jurgen Klopp is not keen to talk about Liverpool’s top-four prospects after his team’s 3-2 Premier League win against Nottingham Forest on April 22.

The Reds didn’t have it easy against the Tricky Trees at Anfield and had to wait until the 47th minute for Diogo Jota to open the scoring. Once the first goal came, chaos ensued.

Goals from Neco Williams and Jota (his second of the game) at four-minute intervals meant the Reds led 2-1 with the game 10 minutes into the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White equalised with a brilliant scissor-kick in the 67th minute.

But Mohamed Salah had different plans. The Egypt international scored three minutes later to score his 27th goal in his 44th game this season.

Back in the hunt?

The win means we are seventh in the table with 50 points from 31 games. The Reds trail fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by just three points while fourth-placed Newcastle United, who have a game in hand, are on 56 points.

We have been far too inconsistent with our results this season and are in danger of missing out on UEFA Champions League football next season. When asked if two wins in two meant the Reds are in the race to finish in the top four, Klopp told MOTD, via BBC:

“Honestly top four at the moment, we have nothing to do with it we will see about that in a few weeks. The rest we have no influence. We take it game by game and we have West Ham next which is really tough and then we go from there but it will be tough again, but I am happy we got all three points again.”

The poor guy probably doesn’t want to jinx it as he did with the UEFA Champions League this season by joking about booking tickets to Istanbul (hosts of this year’s UCL final) after losing last year’s final against Real Madrid.

Top four is a possibility but a faint one. We must keep hoping and praying that we somehow qualify for UEFA’s premier club competition because one can’t deny that it adds significantly to a club’s pull in the transfer market – a place we will have to be very active in this summer.
